Abortion rights & the struggle for women's liberation: a Direct Action forum
CURRENTLY a couple in Cairns are facing the prospect of years in prison on charges brought under Queensland's anti-abortion laws. The case threatens to set a dangerous new precedent on abortion law in Queensland, which would in turn embolden anti-abortion forces around the country. While abortion has been decriminalised in the ACT and Victoria, it remains subject to criminal law in all other states and territories. Restrictions on access to abortion remain in place even where the criminal laws have been repealed. This is despite the fact that polls consistently find that over 80% of people in Australia support a woman's right to choose abortion.
Why do the legal, financial and ideological barriers to abortion remain today - so many years after the women's liberation movement won the fight for abortion rights? This forum will address this question and discuss the ongoing struggle to build the campaign for free, safe, accessible abortion on demand. The forum will feature Revolutionary Socialist Party member Kathy Newnam who is a long time activist in women's liberation campaigns and is currently active in the campaign in Queensland for the dropping of the abortion charges against the Cairns couple.
